The Worshipful Company of Barbers played host to 120 school children from 12 inner city schools across London for a most entertaining and informative careers event held in the beautiful Barber Surgeons Hall. Twelve senior consultants and doctors from London Hospitals covering various medical disciplines voluntarily gave up their time to answer the youngsters questions and to talk to them about life in the profession.
Getting into medical school can be challenging but the event showed the youngsters that contrary to popular belief medicine is open to interested pupils and explained a pathway into the medical profession via the Kings College Extended Medical Degree Program part sponsored by the Worshipful Company of Barbers. Students currently on this degree program were on hand to talk to the aspiring medics and to give them advice on how to get on to the course which this year sees its 300th graduate.
We have only had positive responses about this:
- “The students all enjoyed it tremendously, and feedback was overwhelmingly positive.”
- “……it was immediately evident that they’d found the day hugely useful. My colleague, who led the trip, also passed on that the whole day was brilliantly organised, enjoyable, and very informative.”
We have also received requests from schools saying that they would like to be asked back if we have another such event. We intend to run this event again in February 2018.
